The 2014 edition of the Winter Olympics will take place in Sochi, Russia and will break records. Never before have so many different sports been featured. A total of 98 events are planned and 12 different sports will be represented. A record number of women will take part in the games and about 80 countries will participate. If you are not one of the lucky sports fans who will get to see the games in person in Sochi, you will be able to follow the Olympics online thanks to live streaming.

Live streaming will be offered by the channels or networks that own the rights to the Olympics. The Olympics will be broadcast in 44 different countries and there is only one channel or network that owns the copyrights for the games in each of these countries.

Because online streaming has become so popular for major events such as sports competitions, presidential elections or even the daily news, most of the channels broadcasting the games will also offer live streaming of the events so you can watch the games in real time and not miss out on any event.

The sports featured at the 2014 Winter Olympics include ice hockey, figure skating, curling, speed skating, short track, biathlon, ski jumping, cross-country, the Nordic combined, alpine skiing, freestyle skiing, snowboard, bobsleigh, skeleton and luge. Popular events like ice hockey or figure skating will get plenty of air time on TV but other events like the Nordic combined or the biathlon will be a lot easier to follow thanks to the live streaming available on the Internet.

You can already check the schedule of the events planned. The official Sochi 2014 website has a detailed schedule of all the events as well as their date and time. Events will begin on February 6th and end on February 23rd and take place at two different venues. Keep in mind that there is a time difference of nine hours between Sochi and New York. You should figure out what the time different is between where you live and Sochi to get an idea of when the events you want to follow will be available for live streaming.

NBC will broadcast the games in the US, the BBC owns the copyrights for the games in the UK and other channels and networks broadcasting the games in English include RTE in Ireland, Network Ten in Australia, CBC Television, RDS, Sportsnet TSN and TVA Sports in Canada, Sportfive in Europe, Sky Television in New Zealand and in the Pacific Islands and STAR India in South Asia. There are many more channels broadcasting the games and live streaming available if you speak other languages than English.

You can get ready for the games by visiting the Sochi 2014 official website. Take a look at the events planned and at the schedule. Even though the sporting events begin on the 6th of February, the opening ceremony will take place on the 7th. You will find links to the official Sochi 2014 social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. The YouTube channel already has some videos of the venues as well as videos featuring the volunteers working on the games. You should also check the official site of the channel or network that will broadcast the games in your area. Test one of their current live streams to make sure you already have the plug ins required to watch their videos and download it if needed. Some channels already have a weekly show to keep you updated about the games.

Following the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics should be easy thanks to live streaming over the Internet. Check the schedule in advance and make plans so you do not miss your favorite events or the opening and closing ceremonies!

Those who want to watch their favorite events — like figure skating and hockey — in primetime can still check in with Bob Costas and the gang, but those of us who need our 24/7 fix can get it at the link below, essentially eliminating that pesky nine-hour time difference (from Eastern Standard Time) that has made Olympics viewing so difficult in the past:

Beginning on Thursday, Feb. 6, with preliminary rounds of Snowboarding, Freestyle Skiing and Figure Skating, every phase of every competition from all 15 sports will be streamed on the site AND via mobile app.

Television coverage will also expand to 18 days for the first time in Winter Games history, with the addition of a Thursday night NBC Primetime show on Feb. 6, before the Opening Ceremonies on Friday, Feb. 7. Live daytime broadcasts begin Saturday, Feb. 8, on the NBC Sports Network.

Sochi Winter Olympics 2014 Live, Meryl Davis and Charlie White comforted and cheered their fellow Americans on a tough first night of competition for the U.S. in the new Olympic event of team figure skating.

Nice to have their support, no doubt. But the biggest pick-me-up they can provide? Two dazzling performances in ice dancing.

The United States team was tied for the fifth-most points after the Thursday short programs for the men and pairs, technically resting in seventh after tiebreakers.

Only the top five countries advance to the free skates, a cut made after the women and ice dancers complete their short programs. But the Americans are hardly in a precarious position, because they boast the reigning world ice dancing champs in Davis and White.

Russia leads with 19 points, and the other favorite, Canada, has 17. The U.S. earned just 10 on Thursday, but has better balance then most of the squads ahead of it and two wins from its ice dancers would be worth 20 points.

Still, after the falls and botched jumps from U.S. champions Jeremy Abbott and the pairs team of Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir, bronze may be the team’s best hope.

For Abbott, it was yet another rocky performance at a major international event. A four-time U.S. champ, he has never captured that magic on the biggest of stages. Before the 2010 Olympics, he beat Evan Lysacek at nationals, only to finish ninth in Vancouver while his compatriot won gold.

Thursday’s short program looked a lot like his first outing at the games four years ago, with Abbott crashing into the boards after falling on his opening quad jump. Yet he insisted this was completely different.

He dubbed the team event a “run through.” Afterward, he said he told himself: “All right, I had my Olympic disaster, and now I can move on and do what I came here to do.”

That’s the individual event, which starts next Thursday.

“I really wanted to pull out a win for my friends and for my family. That was very important to me. I’m torn apart I couldn’t do that for them,” he said. “But for me, I feel like it was a very positive step. You’re all going to think I’m crazy. I just fell on my butt and did a horrible program.

“But I have another chance next week.”

Abbott finished with 65.65 points, seventh among the men, after managing only a single axel on a planned triple. U.S. runner-up Jason Brown is likely to replace him in Sunday’s free skate, a switch allowed by the rules in two of the four disciplines.

Two-time U.S. champ Ashley Wagner plans to do the short program Saturday, though she’s coming off a mistake-marred free skate of her own at nationals. The pairs free skate is also Saturday. The event wraps up Sunday with the men’s, women’s and ice dance long programs.

Castelli and Shnapir, in their first Olympics, were fifth among the pairs with a personal-best 64.25 points in an international event. Castelli fell and Shnapir put his hand down on their side-by-side triple salchows, but they were solid enough overall to solidify the Americans’ spot in the standings after Abbott’s scuffles.

“For making two mistakes in our jumps and still getting our season best and personal best, we’re thrilled with that final score,” said Shnapir, who was born in Russia but moved to the U.S. as a toddler, “and we know we can score much, much higher with a clean program.”

Sochi Winter Olympics 2014 Live: This was not supposed to be the United States’ best night of the inaugural Olympic team competition. The men and the pairs were expected to fare worse Thursday night than the American women and ice dancers Saturday night.

But it was never supposed to be as bad as this.

Jeremy Abbott, the four-time U.S. men’s champion, was just awful. He fell on his quad, turned a planned triple-triple combination jump into a triple-double and popped his triple axel into thin air.

He buried his head in his hands after finishing at the Iceberg Skating Palace. It was the appropriate reaction.

This wasn’t any old typical Abbott international meltdown, such as his terrible ninth-place finish at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. This was worse. He didn’t just let himself down. He let his team down. He put the Americans, who are favored to win a medal, in a big hole. But not an insurmountable one. There are two nights left, a cut to be made and a few nations who have nowhere near the depth the United States has across all four disciplines.

But still, Abbott’s showing was a total embarrassment. Never one to be able to master his nerves, he picked the worst possible time to perform horribly.

After saying he was “torn apart” by his short program, he then uttered one of the most confounding lines in figure skating history:

“For me, I think it was a very positive step. You’re all going to think I’m crazy.”

Yes, we are.

“You know, like, I just fell on my butt. I have another chance. I’ve been skating extremely consistently here. I think I just needed to kind of like work out the bugs, shake off the demons.”

That comment just won the Olympic gold medal for utter self-absorption. Abbott has almost no chance to win a medal in the packed men’s event, not even if he skates very well. His best chance — every American’s best chance, except for gold-medal favorites Meryl Davis and Charlie White – is in the team event.

If the United States doesn’t win the bronze medal in the team event, it could very well come down to Abbott’s debacle of an opening skate Thursday night, Sochi Winter Olympics 2014 Live.
